Bio

Gerri Frame

In the late 70s and the 80s, Gerri broke into the previously exclusively male preserve of live sound engineering. She was the first woman in the world to mix live and toured with some of the most exciting bands of the era: Depeche Mode, Yazoo (Vince Clark and Alison Moyet), and Nick Cave’s groundbreaking group The Birthday Party.

In 1980 Gerri moved to Manhattan at the behest of independent label, Rough Trade to establish a live touring company for them, and other independent labels in the US. She managed tours and mixed sound for artists from Mute, 4AD, Rough Trade, Factory and others, helping musicians as they found fame and fortune in the US and elsewhere.

The excitement of New York and excesses of touring around the United States, Europe and the Far East, began to pall, so Gerri moved back to London and began to write, becoming a founder member of the Wimpole Writers Workshop. This led her to want to better understand herself and others, so she trained as a psychotherapist, and then wrote Tempo, a novel about relationship and excess in post punk America and Europe.

Now that she has raised three kids, Gerri has turned to considering the emergence of women as artists, through the post punk period. Inspired by the example of peers like Viv Albertine and Kim Gordon, and prompted by the curiosity of women friends, professionals and a new generation interested how hip hop, dance and techno emerged out of that time. Gerri is talking to musicians she worked with, and gathering their reflections to write a blog about those conversations.  Most importantly she wants to write women into the history of that time.
